Meet the Future

On March 21, Connector NL held our first speed networking event, Meet the Future. It took place in Gander in partnership with the Gander & Area Chamber of Commerce and was sponsored by Keyin College. For those not familiar with speed networking, is it an event where you meet individuals or groups of people in a structured, timed format. Think speed dating, but you’re not looking for a partner, you’re looking for a job or an employee.

At our event six upcoming graduates and two new residents of the community spent their morning meeting and talking with the gathered business leaders. The people across the table could be future employers or connections to their industry. For business, this event introduced them to a new workforce, people who are beginning their career in Gander and have new experiences that could benefit their company. The event was also about sharing perspectives. With each rotation and new pairing there was an opportunity to discuss job search questions, such as the best place to post a job ad or what employer qualities are valuable.

Connector NL is a networking program, but we also want to have the conversation about the importance of hiring new residents and upcoming graduates. There are very talented people living in this province that are looking to share their skills and contribute to the economy, yet they may not have a local experience to put on their resume as they establish themselves in their new community or industry. There are also business and community champions that are open to meeting new people and value different perspectives and experiences. Our job is to make the connection between these two.

And we are just getting started. We are planning Meet the Future type events around the province, hosting webinars on Resumes, Networking, and Job Search (view our events calendar here), and we still facilitate our Connector/Connectee matches. So, if you are the future or would like to meet them, reach out to us and get involved with Connector NL.
